PopUp Around NYC with Meagan Brauer!

PopUp Around NYC with Meagan Brauer!
Visiting the city for the holidays, or off of school and just hoping to get to know your hood better? NYC teen Meagan Brauer has you covered! This 18-year-old Hunter College sophomore recently launched the videoblog site PopUp New York out of a desire to share her love for major attractions and overlooked little cool places around the five boroughs with viewers. A Manhattan transplant (she grew up on Staten Island), Meagan knows that even native New Yorkers don't know everything there is to know about their city. "There's so much hidden stuff out there," she says. "If I have a couple hours off from class I can just walk around and I'm always occupied and entertained!" With a little help from dad Bruce (a native of Queens) and mom Jeanne-Marie (another Staten Islander), Meagan picks at least three destinations per month to feature. Then Friday afternoons, she and her production crew of seven (including SVA film studies alum big brother Erik as head cameraman) pile into a van with all of their equipment to go film on location. "We're like a little clown car!" she says. Counting the Motorcycle Safety School in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and the Alice Austen House, "a quiet little museum on Staten Island that's really pretty and peaceful," as among her favorite segments she's done, Meagan's game for about anything so long as it's family friendly, accessible by MTA, easy on the wallet -- and lots of fun! Follow Meagan on Twitter (and even send her a tip!) to see where this intrepid pentaborough blogger is popping up next.

Jane Aldridge

Jane AldridgeOnce upon a time, a senior in high school could keep her plate plenty full balancing homework, SAT prep, college applications, and extracurriculars like, say, tennis or theater--not to mention a social life. Once upon a time, that is, before online pursuits like blogging turned everyday teenagers into virtual celebrities.

In light of the meteoric rise of her personal-style blog, sea of shoes, Jane Aldridge is completing her senior year via online classes. How else would the Trophy Club, Texas-native keep pace with a frenetic schedule that includes meetings in Philadelphia with Urban Outfitters execs for her self-designed shoe collection, near-daily photo sessions with her mother to sate the appetite of her style-hungry fans (outfit changes occur a minimum of four times a day), and whirlwind trips to Paris at the invitation of Chanel? When Mr. Lagerfeld calls, you answer!

It's hard to stay grounded when your site counts Kanye West and designer Tory Burch among its tens of thousands of fans. Which is why I wasn't too surprised when an e-mail landed in my in-box, informing me that Jane and her mother, Judy, were guest-designing a coat for indie-cool trench label Gryphon. Shoes may be Jane's first love, but a girl can't survive on high heels alone! Gryphon's Aimee Cho explained that, as a fan of both Jane's and Judy's blogs, she had struck up an e-mail correspondence with them, and from there asked them to collaborate with her. In fact, the entire transaction took place over e-mail--sketches, production notes. To this day, Cho has never met or even spoken by telephone with Jane or Judy. The future of business as we know it?

But back to the trench. It has dramatic kimono sleeves and a leather, nomad-inspired pouch. "It's edgier than anything I've done," says Cho. Jane and Judy fleshed it out while living in Japan last summer, and their references extend far and wide, from Mad Max to Amelia Earhart.

Thinking ahead to her future, Jane says she hopes to cross the country sometime in the next year to attend FIT in New York. But college must wait for now. First Jane has another trick up her sleeve--one that harks back to the print-media days of yore. Yes, the Internet darling and her mom have signed a book deal. After all, even in this new era, style does not exist solely in cyberspace.

PurseBlog

PurseBlogWhen PurseBlog's Vladimir Dusil and Meaghan Mahoney decided to start their own blog in 2005, it was a little out of the ordinary. After all, this was before bloggers sat front row at shows, before Bryanboy inspired Marc, and way before Tavi was fashion royalty. Yet the duo took a leap of faith and launched the now uber-successful PurseBlog.com.

"When I started the blog, I had two handbags," recalls Mahoney, who has been documenting her obsession with purses for five years now. "Ever since I was a teenager, I would always go to my parents and beg for a new bag."

This fascination with purses has made her quite an authority, even though her approach is quite simple. At first, Meaghan would research a bag, look it up online, and analyze it from the images. Sometimes, she would peruse her local department stores and try the bag on, playing with the texture or feeling the quality. But now that the blogging world has taken off, there's less department store trips for PurseBlog.

"Designers will send us bags, or we'll go to their showrooms to see the collection. That gives us the opportunity to look at it here, close-up. That way, I can try it on, see how it fits, or where it hangs, which is so important to me," she said. She added that with all of her experience also comes a great deal of learning: "If you know the designer well, you eventually get a better idea of what the bag will look like in person."
